And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

Understanding Matthew 19:9: Grace, Boundaries, and Marital Unfaithfulness

Marriage is one of the most sacred covenants established by God. From the very beginning, His divine blueprint has been clear: one mate for one life, a beautiful, lifelong union between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:5-6). Scripture beautifully illustrates this exclusive devotion as a “garden locked up” and a “spring enclosed” (Song of Solomon 4:12).

Yet, we live in a fallen world where the devastating pain of betrayal happens. When faced with the heartbreak of a broken covenant, many believers ask: What does God say about divorce when unfaithfulness occurs?

In Matthew 19:9, Jesus addresses this directly, balancing God’s high ideal for marriage with profound grace and protection for the innocent party.

The Exception Clause: Marital Unfaithfulness

While Jesus strictly upholds the sanctity of marriage, He explicitly provides an exception:

“I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.” — Matthew 19:9

The Greek word used here for unfaithfulness is porneia. This is a broad term that encompasses adultery (sexual relations outside of the marriage), sexual immorality, and flagrant violations of the marriage bed. Under the New Covenant, Jesus recognizes that marital unfaithfulness is such a cruel, devastating sin against a spouse that the innocent party is permitted the right to end the marriage and is free to remarry another believer (1 Corinthians 7:27-28).

To fully understand why Jesus allows this, we can look at how Scripture treats unfaithfulness across both the Old and New Testaments:

Biblical Context	The Standard & God’s Heart
The Old Testament Law	Under the old covenant, post-marital adultery was met with the death penalty for both offenders (Leviticus 20:10). This execution naturally dissolved the marriage, leaving the innocent spouse legally and spiritually free to remarry.
The Exception for “Hardness of Heart”	When Jesus criticized divorce in Matthew 19:7-8, He wasn’t criticizing separation due to adultery. He was correcting the loose Old Testament practices (Deuteronomy 24:1-4) where men divorced wives simply because they “displeased” them. God permitted that only because of human hardness of heart, though His desire was always reconciliation.
The Pauline Exception (Abandonment)	In 1 Corinthians 7:12-16, the Apostle Paul provides one more permissible reason for divorce: if an unbelieving spouse abandons a Christian, the believer is no longer bound.

Healing, Forgiveness, and Hope for the Future

It is a well-known truth that God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16). He hates it because He loves us, and He knows the deep psychological, emotional, and familial destruction it leaves in its wake.

However, it is vital to remember this life-giving truth: Divorce is not the unforgivable sin.

If you have experienced a divorce in your past—even one that did not fall under these biblical standards—hope is never lost. Our God is a redeemer. If there has been a genuine change of heart, an admission of past brokenness, and a turning toward Christ, God forgives completely.

While a past divorce may still carry lingering consequences or emotional scars, God can and will work through your present circumstances. When we submit to His purposes and choose to follow Him, He meets us with a grace that is greater than our past.

A Closing Prayer for Healing and Guidance

Heavenly Father,

We come before You acknowledging that You are the author of covenant, love, and marriage. Lord, we lift up anyone reading this who is carrying the heavy, shattering burden of marital unfaithfulness or the pain of a broken marriage. You see every tear, and You know the depth of the betrayal.

We pray for comfort for the brokenhearted. Grant supernatural wisdom, clarity, and discernment to those standing at a crossroads, trying to navigate the complex boundaries of Your Word. For those who have experienced divorce, shield them from the lies of condemnation. Wash them in Your grace, remind them of Your forgiveness, and give them the strength to submit to Your beautiful purposes today.

Redeem what has been broken, Lord, and anchor our hearts in Your unfailing love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
