Out of the Heart: Understanding the Root of Our Actions

We live in a world that is obsessed with outward appearances. We meticulously curate our social media profiles, monitor our public reputations, and focus heavily on external self-improvement. But thousands of years ago, Jesus shifted the focus from the external to the internal.

In Matthew 15:19, Jesus delivers a sobering truth that cuts straight through our outward projections:

“For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.”

This statement was revolutionary for its time. The religious leaders of the day, the Pharisees, were incredibly focused on external rituals, like ceremonial handwashing. They believed defilement came from the outside world. Jesus flipped their theology on its head, explaining that true defilement does not come from what we put into our mouths, but from what flows out of our hearts.

The Heart is the Source

When the Bible speaks of the “heart,” it isn’t just talking about the physical organ pumping blood, nor is it referring strictly to vague emotions. In ancient Scripture, the heart represents the innermost core of a person—the seat of our thoughts, desires, motivations, and choices.

Jesus lists a heavy catalog of sins: evil thoughts, hatred (which leads to murder), broken commitments, dishonesty, and slanders. His point is clear: our actions are merely the fruit; our heart is the root.

A lie spoken aloud started as a deceptive thought in the heart.
An act of betrayal started as an unchecked, nurtured desire in the mind.
Harsh words or slanders stem from a well of bitterness within.

Education, self-help, and stricter laws can restrain bad behavior on the outside, but they cannot fix the underlying human nature. We cannot simply manage our symptoms; we need a cure for the source.

The Call to Guard and Renew

Because the heart is the spiritual fountainhead of our lives, we must follow the ancient wisdom found in Proverbs 4:23: “Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”

We must be careful about what we entertain, what we ruminate on, and what we allow to take root. When a toxic or evil thought enters our mind, we face a choice: we can let it sit and grow, or we can bring it to God for cleansing.

The beautiful reality of the Gospel is that we don’t have to clean our hearts by our own power. We can echo the prayer of David in Psalms 139:23: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” When we invite the Holy Spirit to perform “spiritual surgery,” He forgives us, washes us clean, and gives us a new heart with righteous desires.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, Your Word reminds us that You do not look at the outward appearance, but You look straight at the heart. Lord, we acknowledge that apart from You, our hearts can easily harbor bitterness, pride, envy, and deceitful thoughts. We confess that we often spend more time worrying about how we look to others than how we look to You.

We ask today for the power of the Holy Spirit to purify our hearts. Search us, O God, and expose any hidden sin, unforgiveness, or malice within us. Wash us clean through the blood of Jesus Christ. Remove our hearts of stone and give us hearts of flesh that love You, seek righteousness, and speak truth. Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, our Rock and our Redeemer. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
