Activating Your Kingdom Authority: A Study of Mark 3:15
When Jesus walked the earth, He didn’t just preach a message; He demonstrated a Kingdom. He came with a clear mission: to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8) and to set the captives free (Luke 4:18). But one of the most remarkable aspects of His ministry is that He didn’t keep this mission to Himself.
In Mark 3:15, we see a pivotal moment where Jesus appoints the twelve disciples and gives them “authority to drive out demons.”
Driving out demons means commanding evil spirits to leave the individuals they have inhabited and breaking their control over those lives. This wasn’t a specialized gift reserved for a select few spiritual giants—it was a core part of the commission Jesus handed to His followers. Here are three powerful truths we can draw from scripture about this spiritual authority:
1. Authority is Given, Not Earned
Right after Jesus chose His disciples, He immediately equipped them. He gave them “authority to drive out demons” (Mark 3:14-15; Matthew 10:1). Later, when He sent out the seventy-two, He expanded on this, giving them “authority… to overcome all the power of the enemy” (Luke 10:19). Our ability to stand against darkness does not come from our own strength, intellect, or goodness. It relies entirely on the delegated power and authority of Jesus Christ.
2. Preaching and Power Go Hand in Hand
The disciples were not instructed to just go out and speak words; they were called to demonstrate the reality of God’s Kingdom. They were to preach and display God’s power by doing battle against Satan—driving out demons and healing every kind of disease and sickness (Matthew 10:1-7). True gospel ministry addresses both the spiritual and physical reality of human suffering, proving that the Kingdom of God is greater than the kingdom of darkness.
3. The Commission Remains Unchanged
This authority didn’t expire when the first disciples passed away. After His resurrection, Jesus reminded His followers once again to preach His message and exercise their God-given authority over Satan and his demons (Mark 16:15-17). The resurrection cemented His victory, and as His body on earth today, we carry that same triumphant authority.
As believers, we do not fight for victory; we fight from victory. Because Christ lives in us, we have been deputized to push back the darkness in our communities, our families, and our world, continuing the very battle Jesus started.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the incredible victory we have in Jesus Christ. Thank You for not leaving us defenseless, but for equipping us with Your holy power and the authority of Your name. Lord, open our eyes to realize the depth of the spiritual authority we carry through Mark 3:15.
We pray for anyone today who feels oppressed, enslaved, or attacked by the enemy. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, break every chain and release Your perfect freedom. Help us to walk boldly, to preach Your truth confidently, and to enforce the victory of the cross wherever we go. Let Your Kingdom come and Your will be done in our lives today.
