Add to Your Faith: The Active Pursuit of Christian Growth

True Christian maturity requires our active, daily cooperation with God’s grace to build godly character traits. While our salvation is a free gift, our spiritual growth demands that we “make every effort” to develop our faith.

In 2 Peter 1:5-7, the Apostle Peter counters false teachers who claimed that spiritual knowledge exempted them from moral living. Instead, Peter provides a building-block list of seven character traits that every believer must diligently cultivate to live a victorious, effective, and productive life.

The Divine Blueprint for Character

Godly characteristics do not automatically grow without our deliberate focus. Peter explicitly instructs us to supplement our foundational faith with these essential virtues:

  • Virtue (Moral Excellence): Choosing to stand for the truth and living a life of integrity.
  • Knowledge: Seeking a deeper, practical understanding of God’s will and His Word.
  • Self-Control: Mastering our passions and desires rather than being mastered by them.
  • Perseverance: Staying patient and remaining steadfast under trials and mockery.
  • Godliness: Living with a deep reverence for God in every ordinary moment of life.
  • Brotherly Kindness: Showing genuine affection, warmth, and support to our spiritual family.
  • Love (Agape): The ultimate crown of selfless, sacrificial love for God and all mankind.

Making Every Effort

The phrase “make every effort” reminds us that personal Christian growth is a partnership. As Paul echoes in Philippians 2:12-13, we work out our salvation with fear and trembling, because God is the one actively working in us to will and to act. We must reject the lazy assumption that spiritual maturity just happens over time. It requires our intentional obedience, reliance on the Holy Spirit, and daily discipline.

When we actively add these traits to our lives, we ensure that our faith is never useless or barren. We become the effective, fruit-bearing disciples God called us to be.

A Closing Prayer for Spiritual Growth

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for granting us everything we need for life and godliness through Jesus Christ. We confess that we sometimes wait for maturity to happen automatically, forgetting Your call to be diligent. Holy Spirit, help us to make every effort today to add moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love to our faith.

Guard our minds against complacency and the false teachings of this world. Strengthen our resolve to partner with Your grace, so that our lives may be productive, effective, and honoring to Your holy name.

PARTICIPATE IN THE DIVINE NATURE / 2 PETER 1:4

Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Partakers of the Divine Nature: Living From Our New Birth

We have been given the ultimate privilege of sharing in God’s very nature so we can fulfill our calling to walk in true holiness. Many Christians know that salvation means our sins are forgiven, but it is actually much deeper than that. When you surrendered your life to Jesus, you didn’t just receive a ticket to heaven; you underwent a spiritual transformation. You were given a brand-new identity.

The Miracle of the New Birth

When Jesus spoke to Nicodemus in John 3:3, He stated a powerful truth: “Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” This new birth is not an alteration of your old self. It is a complete spiritual rebirth.

Through this miracle, you receive God’s own life and spiritual salvation. You are no longer defined by your past mistakes, your failures, or the broken patterns of this world. Instead, you are filled with the Holy Spirit.

What Does It Mean to Participate in the Divine Nature?

As 2 Peter 1:4 explains, God has granted us His precious and magnificent promises so that through them, we may become partakers of the divine nature. (Note: While 1 Peter 1:4 beautifully speaks of our imperishable, undefiled inheritance kept in heaven, it is 2 Peter 1:4 that explicitly unpacks this profound concept of participating in His nature!)

Participating in the divine nature means:

  • A New Source of Life: The Holy Spirit lives inside you, providing the actual power to live like Christ.
  • A New Set of Desires: The things of the world lose their appeal as your heart begins to align with God’s desires.
  • A New Spiritual DNA: You have been rescued from spiritual death and made alive with the very characteristics of your Heavenly Father.

Privilege Brings Responsibility

Sharing in God’s nature is a gift, but it also brings a holy responsibility. We are called to actively conform to His character and His standard of righteousness.

We see this layout clearly in two primary areas of our daily walk:

1. Honoring the Temple

In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. We were bought with a high price. Because God’s nature resides within us, how we treat our bodies, minds, and actions matters deeply.

2. Putting on the New Self

Ephesians 4:24 instructs us to “put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” Daily, we must choose to lay down old habits of anger, deceit, or pride, and instead put on love, grace, and truth.

You do not have to white-knuckle your way into holiness. You simply need to rely on the divine nature that already lives inside you. Walk confidently today knowing you have been born again into His family.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful miracle of the new birth. Thank You that You did not just patch up my old life, but You made me completely new and gave me an incorruptible inheritance. I am incredibly grateful for the immense privilege of participating in Your divine nature.

Holy Spirit, I ask that You empower me today to live up to this high calling. Help me to honor You with my body and my mind. Give me the strength to put off the old ways of the world and to daily put on the new self, reflecting Your true righteousness and standard of holiness.

Let my words, thoughts, and actions reflect Your heart to a world that desperately needs to see You.

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

Chosen and Known: Discovering Your Purpose in 1 Peter 1:2

Have you ever stopped to wonder about your place in this vast universe? Long before the foundations of the world were laid, a divine plan was already in motion. 1 Peter 1:2 gives us a breathtaking look into how God views His people, revealing that we are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ.

Let’s dive into what this beautiful verse means for our daily faith walk and how the entire Trinity works together to bring us home.

Understanding the Foreknowledge of God

When scripture says we are chosen according to God’s foreknowledge, it means that because God knows all things, He has always known how He would work out His plan to save us. He designed a way to restore humanity to a right relationship with Him through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus. This rescue mission was not a backup plan; it was firmly in place before creation and human history ever began.

It is important to understand what foreknowledge does not mean. It does not mean that God forces our hands or predetermines who will be saved and who will be condemned. God is all-knowing, but He has also gifted us with free will. While He perfectly knows the choices we will make, He does not cause us to make them.

Instead, “foreknowledge” in this passage highlights God’s sovereign, supreme choice to love and set aside a people for Himself.

The Church: The Object of His Love

In a broad sense, this chosen “people” refers to the Church as a whole—the collective body of true followers of Jesus Christ. Before time began, God determined that His Church would be comprised of redeemed people, purchased and restored through Jesus’ sacrifice to serve His greater purposes.

But a collective body is made up of individuals. The Church grows as individual believers respond to Christ by surrendering their lives to Him in faith and devotion. We continue to walk as His chosen people as we actively choose daily to remain loyal to Jesus, living securely in the purposes He has for our lives.

A Perfect Triune Plan

Remarkably, 1 Peter 1:2 highlights how all three persons of the Trinity work in perfect unity to accomplish our redemption and spiritual restoration:

  • God the Father sets the overarching plan in motion through His sovereign foreknowledge and love.
  • The Holy Spirit works within our hearts, sanctifying us and drawing us into a right, obedient relationship with God.
  • Jesus Christ provides the ultimate sacrifice through His blood, redeeming us and serving as the anchor of our faith.

You are not an afterthought. You are known, you are loved, and you are called into a beautiful community of believers designed to reflect God’s glory to the world.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving us before the world began. We praise You for Your incredible foreknowledge and the sovereign plan You designed to rescue and restore us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for gifting us with the freedom to choose You, and for the Holy Spirit who continuously works in our hearts to guide us toward obedience.

Help us to live fully in our identity as Your chosen people. Give us the strength to remain fiercely loyal to Jesus, to surrender our lives to Him daily, and to serve Your high purposes with devotion. Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

The Multiplication of Grace: Finding Abundance in a Chaotic World

We live in a world obsessed with addition. We try to add more hours to our day, more cash to our bank accounts, more achievements to our resumes, and more followers to our social media pages. We constantly strive to accumulate, yet we often end up feeling spiritually depleted.

But the Gospel introduces us to a completely different kind of math. God isn’t interested in merely adding to our lives; He wants to multiply His blessings within us.

In 2 Peter 1:2, the Apostle Peter opens his second letter with a radical, life-altering greeting:

“Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.”

Other translations render this as, “Grace and peace be multiplied to you…”. When you feel like you are running on empty, God’s design is for His unmerited favor (grace) and His overwhelming tranquility (peace) to grow exponentially inside your heart.

How do we unlock this divine multiplication? Peter leaves us a beautiful roadmap in this single verse.

Grace is a Gift, But Growth Takes Intimacy

Many believers spend their lives begging God for more grace to handle their trials or more peace to calm their anxious thoughts. While God loves to hear our prayers, Peter reveals that these gifts are already unlocked and waiting for us in a specific environment: the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

The word “knowledge” used here isn’t just intellectual head-knowledge. It isn’t about memorizing facts or passing a theology exam. The Greek word epignosis implies a deep, experiential, personal relationship. It is an interactive, alive connection built through time spent together.

Think of it this way: the better you know someone’s character, the more you trust them.

  • When you truly know God as your Provider, your anxiety about tomorrow melts away.
  • When you truly know Jesus as your Redeemer, the weight of past shame loses its grip.
  • When you dig into God’s Word and unearth His promises, you find the exact fuel you need to stand firm.

Your experience of God’s grace is directly tied to your intimacy with Him. If you want grace and peace to be multiplied in your life, you must intentionally cultivate your relationship with the Savior.

The Abundance to Overflow

God never holds back when giving to His children. He does not deal in drops or sprinkles; He deals in floods and overflows. When His grace is multiplied in your life, it transforms your internal landscape so thoroughly that it begins to buffer the blows of daily life. You become active in the world, yet unshaken by its chaos.

But this beautiful multiplication isn’t meant to stop with you. The abundance of grace we receive is intended to overflow into the lives of those around us. The more we experience His radical favor, the more we are empowered to extend that same grace, forgiveness, and love to our families, our coworkers, and our communities.

Stop striving to add what the world offers. Lean into the one who multiplies what your soul truly craves. Turn your heart toward knowing Jesus deeper today, and watch His grace and peace take root in your life.

A Closing Prayer for Multiplied Grace

Gracious and Almighty Father,

We praise You today for Your staggering generosity and Your unwavering faithfulness. Thank You that You do not give to us sparingly, but that You desire Your grace and peace to be multiplied in our lives.

Forgive us for the times we have tried to find peace in our own strength, our schedules, or our possessions. Today, we surrender our desire for control and choose to focus our hearts on knowing You more deeply. Open our eyes as we read Your Word, and draw us near to Your heart.

Lord, let Your grace quiet our anxious minds and steady our steps. May Your overwhelming peace buffer us against the trials of this world, keeping us steadfast and unshaken. As You pour Your abundance into us, help us to be rivers, not reservoirs. Let Your grace overflow from our words and actions so that a hurting world might see Your goodness through us.
