ARE YOU NOT FROM EVERLASTING? / Habakkuk 1:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Habakkuk 1:12

Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O Lord, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.

Standing Firm When the World Shakes: Trusting the Everlasting God

We have all looked at the world around us and wondered, “Lord, what are You doing?”

When violence, injustice, and corruption seem to win, it is easy for our faith to falter. The prophet Habakkuk found himself in that exact valley of confusion. He looked at his own nation, Judah, and saw widespread moral decay. But when he cried out to God for justice, the answer he received was more shocking than the problem itself.

God revealed that He was raising up the Babylonians (the Chaldeans)—a cruel, defiant, and notoriously brutal empire—to execute judgment on Judah.

Habakkuk was appalled. How could a holy God use a nation so arrogant that their own military might was their god? How could He remain silent while the wicked swallowed up those more righteous than themselves?

In the midst of his deep distress, Habakkuk did something profoundly instructive for us today. Before anchoring his heart in his circumstances, he anchored his heart in the character of God. He asked a question that answered itself:

“Are You not from everlasting, O LORD my God, my Holy One? We shall not die.” — Habakkuk 1:12

Remembering Who God Is

When your world is spinning out of control, you must stop looking at the chaos and look back at the Attributes of God. Notice the three foundational truths Habakkuk claims about God in a single sentence:

  • He is Everlasting: Civilizations rise and fall. Babylon was the superpower of the day, but they were temporary. God is outside of time, governing history from beginning to end.
  • He is Personal: Habakkuk doesn’t just say “God.” He says “my God, my Holy One.” Even when God’s macro-actions in history are terrifying, His micro-covenant relationship with His people remains intact.
  • He is Holy: God’s purity never shifts. He cannot endorse evil, even when He temporarily permits a wicked tool to bring correction to His people.

The Certainty of Our Survival

Because God is everlasting, Habakkuk confidently states, “We shall not die.”

The prophet knew that Babylon would bring devastation, but he was equally confident that total destruction was impossible. Why? Because a completely wiped-out Israel would contradict God’s ultimate purpose. God had chosen Israel to preserve the lineage of the Messiah and to reveal His grand plan of salvation to the entire human race.

Babylon was merely an instrument of temporary correction; they did not hold the pen of destiny.

Living by Faith Today

Like Habakkuk, we are called to be lookouts who stand on the watchtower of expectant faith. We are allowed to respectfully bring our honest questions, laments, and fears to God—He is not threatened by our confusion.

But we must ultimately wait on the Lord, knowing that what looks like a victory for evil is often just a single, incomplete chapter in God’s larger story.

No matter what global powers shift, what financial storms brew, or what personal crises hit your life, remember this: Your circumstances do not define God’s goodness; God’s character defines your security. He is from everlasting, and His purposes for your life cannot be thwarted.

A Closing Prayer

Eternal and Holy God,

When the world around us feels chaotic and we cannot understand Your timing or Your methods, remind our hearts of who You are. You are the Everlasting King, the Rock of Ages, and our Holy One. We confess that we often let our fears overshadow Your promises.

Give us the faith of Habakkuk to stand watch and trust Your plan, even when it unfolds in ways we do not expect. Thank You for preserving us, for loving us, and for holding our ultimate destiny securely in Your hands. We rest in the certainty that Your saving purposes will prevail across the earth.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
