(KJV) Habakkuk 1:1

The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.

Finding Faith in the Questions: A Journey Through Habakkuk

Habakkuk’s prophecy unfolds not as a sermon delivered to the masses, but as an intimate, raw conversation between a frustrated prophet and Almighty God.

While most prophets spoke for God to the people, Habakkuk spoke to God on behalf of a hurting nation. Written between the fall of Nineveh in 612 B.C. and the rise of the Babylonian Empire, this short book captures a terrifying time in history. The world was shifting, evil was rampant, and God’s people in the kingdom of Judah were deeply corrupted.

Look at how the book begins:

“The prophecy that Habakkuk the prophet received.” — Habakkuk 1:1

The word “prophecy” here is translated from the Hebrew word massa, which literally means a “burden.” Habakkuk was carrying a heavy weight. He looked around his society and saw violence, injustice, and strife. Driven by this burden, he cried out with a question many of us have whispered in the dark: “Why doesn’t God do something about the evil around us?”

The Confusion of God’s Answer

God did not silence Habakkuk for asking. Instead, He answered—but His answer was completely unexpected. God revealed He was raising up the Babylonians (a notoriously cruel and pagan nation) to bring judgment on Judah.

This left Habakkuk even more confused. How could a holy God use a nation more wicked than Judah to punish His own people?

From Complaining to Confiding

We often think that having strong faith means never questioning God. Habakkuk shows us a different path. He teaches us that it is okay to bring our doubts, wrestling, and “whys” to the Lord, provided we stay at His feet to listen for the answer.

By the end of their dialogue, the circumstances in Judah hadn’t changed yet, but Habakkuk’s heart had. He moved from questioning God’s timeline to resting in God’s sovereignty. He learned a truth that echoes into our lives today: the righteous shall live by faith (Habakkuk 2:4). When we cannot trace God’s hand, we must learn to trust His heart.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Like Habakkuk, we confess that there are times when the world around us feels overwhelming, chaotic, and filled with injustice. We look at our circumstances and wonder why You seem silent, or why deliverance takes so long. Thank You that You do not cast us away when we bring our heavy burdens and honest questions to You.

Forgive us for the times we try to fit Your grand plans into our limited understanding. Increase our faith today. When Your answers don’t make sense to us, give us the grace to trust Your character. Help us to stop wrestling with Your timeline and instead rest in Your sovereignty. No matter what our circumstances look like, we choose to live by faith and joyfully trust in the God of our salvation.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
