Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Greater Than He: Understanding Our Privilege in Christ

In Matthew 11:11, Jesus makes a statement that is both profoundly honoring and deeply mysterious: “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

How could the least in the kingdom of heaven be greater than John the Baptist—a man radical in his devotion, handpicked by God to prepare the way for the Messiah?

To understand this, we have to look at the massive shift in spiritual history that took place through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. John lived and ministered during the time period of the Old Covenant. He was the ultimate prophet of the era of God’s laws, commands, and plans before Christ finished His life’s work on earth. John saw the dawn of the New Covenant, but he did not live to see its full brightness.

As New Testament believers, we have a greater privilege not because of our own merit, but because of everything Christ has revealed and accomplished for us. Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 13:16-17 that many prophets and righteous people longed to see what they saw but did not see it. We stand on the side of finished redemption.

Consider the beautiful word picture Jesus and the New Testament writers use to describe this relationship. John the Baptist beautifully described himself not as the groom, but as the friend of the groom who rejoices greatly at the groom’s voice. John’s role, assigned by God, was to prepare the way. New Covenant Christians, however, are described as part of Christ’s bride—the church. We are brought into an intimacy with Christ that was structurally different from the Old Covenant experience, even though John was a true follower of God saved by his faith.

Our greater privileges as believers today include a much deeper revelation of who Christ is. We have the complete testimony of His life, His sacrificial death, and His victorious resurrection. We live in the era of the Holy Spirit, poured out upon all believers since Pentecost, indwelling us and empowering us daily. We have the honor of testifying not just that the Messiah is coming, but that He has come, He has conquered sin and death, and He is coming again.

Being “greater” than John does not mean we are more righteous, more courageous, or more holy in our personal strength. It means our position in the kingdom is one of unprecedented spiritual wealth and inheritance. We have been given front-row seats to the grace of God, living inside the reality that generations before could only catch glimpses of from afar.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humbled and grateful hearts, filled with awe at the incredible privileges You have bestowed upon us. Thank You for allowing us to live on this side of the cross, inheriting the full reality of the New Covenant. We thank You for the life and ministry of John the Baptist, who faithfully prepared the way, and we thank You even more for Jesus Christ, who finished the work.

Lord, help us to never take our position in Your kingdom for granted. Forgive us for the times we live beneath the high calling and spiritual inheritance You have given us. Fill us afresh with Your Holy Spirit today. Give us the courage to testify boldly of the death and resurrection of Jesus, just as John testified of His coming. May we live lives worthy of the grace, revelation, and intimacy we have been invited into as the bride of Christ. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
