YOU HATE ALL WHO DO WRONG / PSALMS 5:5-6

(KJV) Psalms 5:5-6

The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity. ⁶Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

The Tension of Divine Justice and Mercy

The words of Psalms 5:5–6 can feel jarring to the modern ear: “The arrogant cannot stand in your presence. You hate all who do wrong; you destroy those who tell lies. The bloodthirsty and deceitful you, Lord, detest.”

It is a fierce declaration. We often prefer to focus exclusively on God’s comfort, yet scripture refuses to gloss over His holy antagonism toward evil. God openly opposes those who commit, influence, and encourage wickedness. His hatred of wrongdoing is not a volatile, human temper tantrum; it is the natural reaction of perfect holiness against things that destroy His creation. Because He is entirely good, He cannot remain neutral toward evil.

The Great Paradox of Grace

If the story ended with Psalm 5, humanity would be completely hopeless. We all fail, defy Him, and choose our own stubborn ways. However, scripture reveals a profound paradox: the very God who hates sin possesses an infinite, sacrificial love for the sinner.

He does not leave us to bear the weight of His opposition. Instead, He reaches out with deep compassion and mercy to rescue us from the consequences of our own rebellion.

The Ultimate Sacrifice: The ultimate proof of this love is found in Jesus Christ, who took the judgment we deserved upon Himself.
The Gift of Life: As John 3:16 reminds us, God loved the world so deeply that He gave His only Son, ensuring that anyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.
A New Standing: Through the cross, the “wrongdoer” is not destroyed but transformed, forgiven, and invited into a intimate, personal relationship with the Creator.

God hates the sin that fractures our lives, but He fiercely loves the people He made. His justice demands that evil be dealt with, and His mercy provides the exact substitute required to save us.

Closing Prayer

Holy and Just Father,

We approach You with deep reverence, acknowledging that You are a God of absolute holiness who cannot tolerate evil, deceit, or injustice. We confess that we have often gone our own stubborn ways and fallen short of Your standard.

Thank You for not leaving us in our brokenness. We praise You for the staggering depth of Your love, shown clearly through the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for bearing the judgment we deserved and offering us complete forgiveness, mercy, and a restored relationship with You.

Transform our hearts today. Help us to hate what is evil and cling tightly to what is good. May our lives reflect Your grace, and may we walk daily in the freedom of Your love.
